Why The Power 9?

In a previous post, we spoke about the effectiveness of training full body strength.

In this post, we’ll go over why we built our program on the Power 9.

So what’s the LVFIT Power 9?

It’s 9 essential movement foundations that can be found in each workout.
Sometimes we’ll combine them over a few movements, sometimes, there will be 9 separate exercises.

Regardless of how we structure it, and whether you’re looking to burn fat, build strength, or improve your boxing skills, these pillars cover every aspect of your fitness.

Here’s an overview of the Power 9

  • Push
  • Pull
  • Squat
  • Hinge
  • Core
  • Targeted strength
  • Shoulder Stability
  • Dynamic Conditioning
  • Boxing

Why Push?

Push movements are essential for building lean muscle, strength, and functional power in your upper body. From pressing open a door to lifting overhead, these exercises develop your chest, shoulders, and triceps. They also reinforce proper movement mechanics to prevent injury. Push-ups, overhead presses, and bench presses are staples in this category, building strength you’ll use every day.

Why Pull?

Pull movements are the balancing act to pushing, targeting your back, biceps, and forearms while improving posture and preventing imbalances. Exercises like pull-ups, rows, and TRX variations strengthen your posterior chain, counteracting the forward-focused movements of daily life. Pulling builds overall strength, lean muscle, and protects against injury, making it a vital part of any fitness routine.

Why Squat?

Squatting is a foundational movement that powers up your quads, hamstrings, and glutes while enhancing strength and mobility. From step-ups to lunges to squat variations, this lower-body essential builds a rock-solid base for athletic performance and everyday tasks. It’s not just about strength—it’s about moving better, faster, and stronger in life.

Why Hinge?

The hinge movement is a cornerstone of functional fitness, focused on generating power and stability through the hips. This pattern teaches you how to move efficiently and safely, with exercises like deadlifts, glute bridges, and kettlebell swings at its core. By engaging your glutes, hamstrings, and lower back, the hinge strengthens your entire posterior chain, improving athletic performance, posture, and flexibility. Beyond the gym, mastering the hinge protects your lower back and enhances everyday activities like lifting, bending, and carrying. It’s not just a workout—it’s a blueprint for powerful, pain-free movement.

Why Core?

A strong core is the foundation of every movement you make. It’s not just about abs—your core stabilizes your spine, enhances balance, and supports strength in everything from lifting to running. Exercises like planks, anti-rotation drills, and sit-ups improve posture, boost athletic performance, and protect against injury. Building a powerful core means building a body that moves better, feels stronger, and performs at its peak in both the gym and everyday life.

Why Targeted Strength?

Targeted strength focuses on isolating specific muscles, like the glutes or biceps, to refine, strengthen, and balance your overall physique. These exercises are key for correcting imbalances, addressing weaker areas, and improving aesthetics. Movements like clamshells for glutes or skull crushers for triceps build stability and control, while complementing the power of compound movements. Targeted strength doesn’t just fine-tune your body—it enhances performance, prevents injury, and ensures every muscle works in harmony.

Why Shoulder Stability?

Strong, stable shoulders are the foundation of longevity in fitness and performance. Shoulder stability exercises, like powell raises and seated dumbbell external rotations, specifically target the rear delts and external rotators of the rotator cuff. These smaller muscles play a crucial role in supporting the shoulder joint, keeping it strong, mobile, and injury-resistant. These movements also balance out the pressing and internal rotation common in boxing and other activities. By focusing on shoulder stability, you’ll enhance performance, prevent injuries, and maintain healthy, resilient shoulders for the long haul.

Why Dynamic Conditioning?

Dynamic conditioning is where energy meets variety and excitement. Think plyometrics, combination exercises and everything in between. These movements are designed to keep you engaged, torch calories, and elevate your athletic performance. Beyond being fun and challenging, dynamic conditioning builds endurance, explosiveness, and agility, giving you the edge you need both in and out of the gym.

Why Boxing?

Boxing isn’t just about throwing punches—it’s one of the most effective forms of cardio and conditioning out there. It builds coordination, balance, accuracy, endurance, rotation and mental toughness. Plus, it’s fun, and when fitness is fun, you’re more likely to stick with it. You can read more here on why boxing is more than just hitting a bag.

By incorporating these nine foundational movements into our workouts, we ensure you get a balanced, full-body approach that pushes your limits, keeps you engaged, and delivers real results no matter your fitness level. By focusing on these nine pillars you’ll improve:

  • Functional Strength: Movements that enhance your performance in both workouts and daily life.
  • Injury Prevention: Balanced training strengthens weak links, reducing the risk of overuse injuries.
  • Athleticism: Improved coordination, balance, and agility for better overall performance.
  • Adaptability: Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced athlete, the Power 9 provides scalable, effective training no matter your fitness level.
